These days many forum owners are buying Xenforo and Vanilla instead of VB and few other known premium softwares in the market. Xenforo has license based system whereas the IPB community is 6 month license upgrade along with specific add-ons. And that increases the cost of the forum. So for someone frugal webmaster like me that is not something I'd invest into. And may instead go for Xenforo or similar software which is cheaper on features rather than paying for per year pricing.

So if you were to buy any forum software, would you buy IPB Community forum?

I don't pay for forums anymore. I use to pay 10.00 monthly for Yuku and now that TT bought it out I don't.

IPB is a good software but if I were to pay for a forum software, it would be XenForo. IPB is great though. But I wouldn't pay all of that money for something I can get for much cheaper. That's where XenForo comes in. It's a great, flexible forum software that's the best paid alternative to IPB. They offer the same stuff at a better rate. If money is an issue though, go with MyBB. Another amazing forum software.

I don't have a good experience with IPB but i tried their demo. And their system was really good. But i prefer Xenforo which is cheap and have similar features to IPB. If money is not an issue one can try IPB by paying huge money. If you are in budget and want good experience Xenforo does the work.

Nope, I wouldn't.

Heck, I wouldn't even join an IPB forum. I never really liked the software.

There are cheaper options available in the market such as xenForo. I also heard IPB loves to milk their customers and drain their wallet try. I've seen people complain many times. Even the add-on developers get called out for being "greedy bastards". But I suppose you'd find someone complaining like this about anything with a price tag on it.

I have Xenforo & IPB and like them both fairly equally. I feel like IPB is a little more "cleaner" looking, but Xenforo has more and better (free) add-ons and a better support community. There's not many free themes on IPB either.

IMO how "clean" a theme is depends on the theme you're using itself.

I can, for example, set up an IPB forum and make the default xenForo theme for it, while I can set up an xenForo forum and make a theme that looks like IPB for it.

IPB was a really great software back in its 1, 2 and 3 days. But once they went to 4 it became kind of ugly and very resource heavy on a server. If you still want to run a IPB site, I recommend the Jcink version, its free but it runs as great as any paid version.

I personally recommend Xenforo just for how great, flexible and cheap it is.

I'm also going to vote for Xenforo over IPB. It's much cheaper and not that heavy for the servers. While they are both amazing forum software, the price of IPB is just too much in my opinion. Xenforo will do the work for cheaper and it's very feature rich and customizable. At the end, it's up to the person to choose what they are going to use for their project.

No I wouldn't although I would go for an alternative instead. XenForo is cheaper and better value for money. You'll get the same features for less money, it makes sense to choose this software as a paid choice.

The main problem with IPB is you can't even post on their support forum once your 6 month license runs out. Xenforo you can post whenever you want, you just can't submit the private tickets.

Huh, you can't? That must be new because I knew I could post before with an expired license.

Is there a contact form you can use instead? Try using the contact page as an alternative support solution. Hope you get this solved with IPB soon.

Overall, I agree with you that XenForo is a better forum software than IPB.

I find IPB to be pretty expensive, I don't like the 6 month-license thing they got going on. While Xenforo is cheaper, I still find it to be a bit too pricey now that they raised their prices this past January.  As someone who does foruming as a hobby, i'm not making enough on my forum to warrant paying for an XF license, much less an IPB license these days.

My vote is Xenforo.  I ran IPB back in 2006 and even then it was expensive. lol
