I've seen this thing with website selling, and I'm sure the same could be done with domains.  Basically, a bunch of bozos do an inside-job  - where they bid on the domain to make it appear more valuable.  Now, of course, the fool falls for the scam - not realizing they've driven up the price of crap!

O.K., who has fallen for a scam like this or any kind of auction scam?   How bad was the loss?  Myself, I lost probably around $500 on Flippa once - regarding a website.

Anyway, regarding websites - and sometimes websites come with the domain - another thing that can be done is traffic inflation.  In other words, the seller uses fake traffic stats to make something appear valuable.

This is a pretty old tactic used on a lot of auctions. Sucks to hear you got ensnared by something like this.

You have to be really knowledgeable to beat them at that game.  What exactly are auctions doing to prevent this?

I have never been in the domain scam even though I had bunch of domain. I always bought the domains on the domain registrar. If I didn't get domain of my choice, I would still register a similar domain on the registrar.

Always be cautious about the sites you use. Always do your research and be sure it is a trusted source and do it at your own risk!
