Has anyone ever done any local print advertising? Maybe not in newspapers but paying for a small ad in a sports team booklet or  something similar? I did that for my portrait business because there was the opportunity to have over a thousand people see my name out there...and it got me absolutely zero business.

Never had it done but I can see it working for some stuff especially if you put your number on it.

As a marketing manager I have used newspaper advertising on mass level. I also used matrimonial services of two leading newspapers on the same day which helped find me a groom for my sister. Newspaper advertising is one of the most effective ways to achieve your target.

It would be great if I made flyers and left them at my local game shops, but I wonder how well it would do for my gaming forum.

This method works but in a limited way. First, not all fliers reach to your targeted audiences and the other the cost of paper and printing is too high and third and that makes it least effective is its limited reach. This method is best suitable for local business only.
