I wouldn't reject free solutions like MyBB - as of yet.  Well, those things can be highly useful to someone highly skilled in web development.  I mean, myself, I'd like to use MyBB - but I don't have the tech skills to manipulate mods like MyReactions, among other things.

However, the paradox might be that a lot of people with little development skills might be drawn into free  - simply cause they can't afford paid solutions.  In that case, they might get by, assuming their demands are simple.  I mean, a simple hobby site on the default theme might go for years with no trouble - but the problem is other themes.

Well, what has been your experience with free vs paid?   Well, paid, no matter what the discussion, always has one-on-one support - while the free is a maybe thing.

I can't afford paid software, hence why I use phpbb. I like phpbb anyway. Always have.

I don't feel the need for paid software since I use ProBoards for GamingBoards, it does absolutely everything I'd want it to, and more. Allows for tons of customizations and plugins, plus their support is unmatched. They have paid features as well, however, they're affordable if it's something you actually need.

I am using a paid software and the reason i went for paid is that many needed features where implemented in the core. I don't need a plugin/addon to use the feature. Features like - Like, Reactions, Points, SEO etc.

All the free forum software doesn't have SEO implemented by default. You need an addon to do that.

Paid software all the way. Free forum softwares always have a catch especially ones that are infested with ads!

For me, free software is a good start but when I see it is really effective for my works then it is right time to purchase its paid version.

I agree with Tommy. You can start anything for free. You can wish to pay for work if it starts to pay off. I had no problem in free forums.
