What kinds of questions do you ask potential staffers?

Similar to that of a job interview. Why do you want to work for us? How skilled are you at phpbb? Probably wouldn't hurt to have a test board and maybe have them show you they know how to do certain things, like banning, showing the steps leading up to a possible ban, etc.

WE generally ask- how they would treat members. Would you issue a warning before banning a member or ban them for their first rule-break? In fact we have an entire list of questioner before we higher someone for the job. Remuneration comes in the last because we have a fixed rate for every activity like editing etc. By the way we pay nothing for moderation.

I'm sure most questions would be similar. Even if it is a different niche than another forum.

I ask them what their previous experiences are, their age and location, and most importantly why they believe they'll be an asset to our team of staff.

I remember asking questions, and I still get bad members. So these days I just ask, will you be active? Yes? Welcome aboard!

Actually we are a portal that has multiple activities including article writing, forums, polls and contests (exclusively for Indians). We appoint moderators and Super moderators with different powers. Super moderators work as editors in addition to keeping the site clean, start contests etc. The moderators get nothing but super moderators are paid according to the number of articles edited by them. By the way our site pays upfront for articles so one of the duties of editor is to suggest the amount (within stipulated amount) but the admin makes the cash credit himself finally. However, the actual amount paid and the suggested amount are nearly the same in most cases.
