Some people fund their projects or get revenue via adverts that are displayed on their websites, so it is important for them that people don't use their adv blocker while they visit the website.

Today it seems not that hard to be able to tell when a browser visiting is using an ad-blocker. What is interesting is the approach some websites take about it.

I've seen some people just use a text to try and convince people to deactivate their addon, appealing to their kindness.

I also have seen people trying hard to put measures to force people to disable it in their domain if the visitor wants to use it or make it a very unenjoyable experience.

Anyway, what are your thoughts in ad-blocker and if you were depending on adverts what would be the measures you'd take to try to get most of your visitors to not use their blocker?

One forum I am on has it in their ToS that they track who uses adblockers as opposed to purchasing the block ads upgrade, and that the use of adblockers could effect your chances of ever joining the staff team. Few people really read their terms, but I distinctly remember someone bringing it up in a thread and it sparked anger as some blocked ads because the content of the ads were damaging.

Another trick I've seen used is that ad spots are right in with other content. So, on a blog, for example, you can add images and such and the blog owners would put their adds right in on a main page so it literally cannot be blocked.

@Kaynil, asking people to be kind - kind of like those old ads saying, "Be kind rewind." (remember the video store businesses of the past) - doesn't work in this case.

@Darya, yeah as mentioned in another thread, several alternate ways exist to make money.  Some of them are classifieds, signature space - and to add to that - forum links that lead to an ad.  However, in the last one, remember to mention it's an ad in the title.

Only problem is ads can be malicious, even if they come from google you never know when a bad ad link will slip in and infect users should they happen to click on it.

This is what I'm afraid of.  You can get some pretty harmful stuff from some of these ads.  So, how can you be nice and turn your ad blocker off when there is a chance of getting something harmful?

I never use any ad blocker even if I don't like some of them more then others like pop-up ones. I think if the  advertising is within limit of users' toleration level they would not use any ad blocker. However, as some website owners feel, 'more the merrier' they indirectly force users to block the adverts.

Majority of the ads are bad for the PC/Laptop that is why I have a blocker. I am sure they can find other ways to earn their money

only other way is to sell ad spots or ask for money and neither one is an easy one to do.

I don't use AdBlocker and I will sometimes click on ads for some of the forums if I recognize the advertiser. I'm pretty good about not getting malicious things on my system.

I also don't mind if members use a blocking program because Christianity Haven doesn't utilize a lot of ads.

I have never minded if people use ad block on my forums before and I honestly don't care one way or another now..I know I probably shouldn't but I use ad block myself when I view forums, even mine. This is because I use mobile devices when browsing more than anything, and on a tablet or phone it can be so easy to click on something you don't want to click on

Maybe but websites have to pay to service providers as well to the contributors so they have to make arrangements for that. There is no better way than advertising so the users have to tolerate them. But as I said earlier, excess of everything is bad.
