Has anyone tried to use a press release for marketing in newspapers? I know that's an old gimmick but if you have something creative going on at your site a newspaper might want to print it up. I think it would have to be really different and appealing to the public but it could get your site some visibility.

I suppose this might work if you have like a small town newspaper. Though its not cheap to get into the newspaper really.

I've fantasied of it, but never seriously considered it. Sometimes I think of making little cards and leaving them in community boards or something, haha. My community is about a videogame franchise so there are not many places I could get away to use a print card or advert in the neighbourhood.Β

I wouldn't say this works anymore really - to be fair, I never saw it working in the past. All of the marketing conferences I've been to anyway have said that press releases nowadays are barely accepted. For example, one of the bigger newspaper owners in the UK has said that they don't accept them (they do, but just don't publish) but their editors instead have a target to hit, say, 1 million impressions per month on the site via their articles. As such, the editors write about what people are going to react to in order to hit those targets not what Joe Blogg sends in about his forum. That's my take on it anyway. May be different in other countries but I really couldn't see it in the UK.

Press Releases are free πŸ™‚

I don't know much about UK newspapers but I do see press releases in the local papers in both areas where I've lived so I know they're still in use. Whether they work or not is something else!

Yes of course some still do work and indeed, make it into the actual newspaper. Things of note for the city/region still regularly get mentioned in our local one anyway. However, I work at a college for people with special needs and I can tell you that when we send them in, we barely get even an "Yup, we've received it" mail haha. It's just point-blank ignored which I find quite odd but that's the landscape nowadays I suppose!Β

No one really gets the newspaper where I live, and if they do, I just see newspapers just laying on their driveway. Press releases are usually used in a professional environment rather than an online environment. :/

I've never used press releases for anything and I've been doing this for the better part of twenty years. This is something that has crossed my mind over and over recently though. I think I'm going to try and buy some "gigs' from SEO Clerks and see how it goes. I'll let you all know how that goes. πŸ™‚
