When you are looking to start a project, would you look first for open source to eventually get paid software (closed source), and why would you go down this route, would it be that you have no funding and when funding gets better you would get something that fits the site better with paid software.
Or have you done the research and go straight for closed source paid for software.
What are the advantages you see in Open Source compared to Closed paid software
What are the advantages on closed paid for software over Open Source.
Also taking note what are the disadvantages on both cases.
I am keen to see what you all think and why you have chosen to take which ever route.

I pretty much use open source myself, it has a bigger public feedback and less chance of closing down.

I pretty much use open source myself, it has a bigger public feedback and less chance of closing down.
I'm with Demon on this one. I just find it's more 'open' (duh) and thus more accessible for someone who's wanting to get into it due to the community around it that may be helping to develop it.
