I haven't kept up with it in recent years, but a good while ago I would do post exchanges a lot or just post on sites that allowed do-follow links. Seem to help.

I completely agree. Having a more engaging post apparently ranks your Do-Follow back link higher than if you post a link and leave. Through this, it's helped me get one of my urls top on google for about 5 different searches.
