When choosing hosting, it's important to get something that you are able to scale to meet your needs but also be able to control how much you are spending. As such, I'm sure most people would prefer to get themselves a big beefy VPS right off the bat but finances tend to dictate that that cannot happen. One must ask though, is it really necessary to get yourself an all bells-and-whistles hosting package when you're just starting out?

For me, I always started with a tiny package and just worked my way up as and when it was necessary. On one of my sites, we went from a basic package to a VPS within the space of a few months after our blog started taking off. But that was a natural progression. So what do you think?

It's absolutely not necessary to get all the bells and whistles when you're just starting out. There are exceptions to every rule though. I'm the type of webmaster that will buy everything then build as I go. A lot of people have their whole business plan set up from the start though and are ready to promote like crazy and expect thousands of visitors right away and that's when all of the bells and whistles are necessary so I'm sure they are buying only the best.

I've been more than happy with a shared hosting, granted the others are nice but my site has never needed such an expansion, yet.

I'd prefer a server.  Nonetheless, due to cost, I settle for a VPS.  However, though, servers can be gotten for quite cheap these days - but not with green hosting (what I use), lol.

Anyhow, I do use advanced shared hosting (reseller hosting) on one of my projects because the particular hosting doesn't have VPS with cPanel.

I like using VPS hosting plan because it is stronger than shared hosting. But if I had a better budget, I will go with a dedicated server but keep in mind that it is not cheap and not for small websites or forums.

My project is new and the traffic for my site is pretty low. So shared hosting takes care of my needs. If i see a growth and need i will surely switch to VPS (managed one)

I had ever used a shared hosting but now I am using VPS and dedicated servers. They are better for websites if you need speed, security and resources.

I have used VPS and shared hosting both (Paid ones). I am quite satisfied with those because yes, they are paid and I had rarely any chance of getting those down. I think it is personal preference and matter of choice.

I started with shared back in like 1997.  Eventually found a really nice shared host for like $30 every three months.  Ran that until around 2011, but I blew up their server as my site became very popular.  Tried several VPS hosts which were decent, but still lagged, esp. at peak hours.  Been running fully dedicated now for a couple years, and love it!!  A bit pricey at $54.99 a month, but it never lags, and I can do absolutely anything I want with it and have full console/root access. 😀

That's like $55 a month and expensive for me. But, I think your site is too popular for you to buy that kind of hosting. I am running my website on free  hosting with one time payment and its going well for me.
