Many years ago, on another website that no longer exists, I was gifted a domain. The admin paid for it and pushed it to me. It was pretty good for the project I was working with, which was a forum community. I've been part of the staff in that community before, so it was all exciting to get that. It was our main domain and we used it for almost two years. Then suddenly it stopped working, it turned out that the person that bought it was being shady so they halted everything related to them. I couldn't renew or keep using the domain unless I was feeling generous enough like to pay the fine. HAHA. I had to let it go and hope I could keep an eye for it once it was released back to the market, at least that made me try to find and buy a domain myself, so that's the silver lining.

What about you guys, have you ever let go of a domain you wish you hadn't?

Only out of nostalgia and/or potential sale of the domain..

Once I've decided to close down a project, I tend to just let the domain expire.

I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I still have all my domains to this day, though I'm thinking of selling one or two just to bring in some cash.

Nah. All the domains I've let go was intentional. I'd normally push it (for free) to those guys on domain forums who are looking to buy domains names. Some used to post up threads asking for free domains that are about to expire, so they'd see how it works. That was more on the NameCheap forum when they had one.

I've regretted purchasing domains for sure - mainly because it turned into a dead project down the line haha. There have been one or two over the years though that I've regretted leaving to expire despite the original project going down the pan. Has access to a great webmaster forum domain at one point and it just didn't work out so I let the domain expire but I probably could've sold it for a few bucks. Always one that gets away!

I forgot to renew TheChat.xyz - and I really liked that name!  Also, in a similar fashion, TheCompanyHost.com seemed to get out of my hands.

Anyway, I also owned Zomogo.com (sounds like Trivago.com) - and due to brand-ability that was a dumb loss!
