There seems to be trend for the dot IO domain lately. Many brands are making use of the .IO domains for their branding and the promotion. For years, I was not aware of the reason. But I am trying to make sense of this decision that people make while purchasing the domain. I think the reason behind the purchase is it is simple and easy to remember. And the exact match for branding that you may not get with .com and .net can be often registered with the .io domain. That's what i think is the reason for purchasing the domain.

What do you think is the reason for the purchase of dot IO domain by brands?

It reminds some people of "input, output".  However, others might be just getting them cause they're trendy and they like the sound.  Anyway, there was a boom in .IO prices once; not sure if so now.  Has anyone tried to invest?  I thought about it - but not enough cash at the time!

I still prefer the .com or .net . Not a fan of the others and don't think they rank as well in Google, do they?

One factor is the domain extension, you are correct. Other than that, there are other considerations that Google take into account such as activity levels. It'll definitely help if you get a popular extension though

Beats me why anyone would pay big bucks for a .io - but that was the case once, maybe it still is.  I can't really understand the market - though, with some research it seems more reasonable.  For instance, the Chinese were responsible for driving up those silly number .coms - that seemed useless.
