I've seen many websites go straight on being built with the idea of the revenue that they will make while others don't try to get any funds or revenue until they are in a hard situation or have reached a certain number of views and visits.
What do you reckon are the best times to start looking into the possibility to add some ways to fund and even get revenue from your projects?
What are the things to keep in mind?

When there is enough traffic to turn a profit. Though doing so may cost you some traffic as people hate ad based sites.

Last site I looked to make revenue off, we ran the site for 'free' for about a year, year and a half at first to build up our reputation and community. It did good and once the hosting/other costs got a bit too large due to the traffic we then started introducing ads. Via Google or BSA I can't remember but those ads managed to bring the costs down to manageable levels and sometimes, even give us a 'free' month. When the time to give it all up we managed to sell the site for shy of 5k and turned a profit based on the money we'd both put in so bonus in that aspect lol.

Advertising - When traffic is sufficient to turn a profit. It may cost you some traffic, though, as people hate ad - based sites. That's what I would do.
Selling - When the time is right to give the project up or it becomes really successful, it's best to consider selling the website for a couple of thousands to mainly cover the basic costs. Profit is a bonus.
