If you're running a blog or similar, I'm sure you get tons of those annoying emails from people offering guest posts for your platform in exchange for a backlink (probably!). What do you think of this practice? Do you allow it?

On the flipside, do you engage in that yourself? I've heard it's fairly good traffic wise but seems like a bit of a 'meh' thing to write for someone else.

What are your thoughts?

I have had a few blogs in the past but I never really pushed for them since they were for the most part just personal journals. I think to allow guest posting you need to take into account first what kind of blog you are handling and second what is your current audience.

Even if they are a guest, it is still ina way endorsement if you allow them to express themselves in your blog so you have to make sure their blog entry has good quality and grammar, but also that the tone matches what you have been trying to accomplish. It is also important to make sure the person's links also are okay for you to have in your blog.

I think if you are careful and don't over do it, it can be a good tool to give something fresh when you are having trouble to come up with ideas.

Guest posting on a forum is completely different to guest posting on a blog..

I disallow guest posting purely because I want them to sign up as a member 😛

I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

As nerdface has said on a forum i wont allow guest as i would prefer a user to sign up to engage with the community, but other reasons why i wouldn't allow guest post is spam related, unless i moderated / approval process them

If I ran a blog I would, but on a forum level I do require people to sign up just to avoid any needless spamming.

I just need people to sign up to avoid unnecessary spamming. Unless, I could only consider posting guests if moderation has been enabled. However, it's too much of a risk to take and would use lots of my time.

If you were to allow guest posting, you need to make sure that the person's links are are in line with the T&C's of your website and their English can be understood easily - ensuring that the users posts are good quality in terms of spelling and grammar.
