When you are managing the Forum or the blog, there are always some promotion methods that may not work out for you. And in such case you have to be pretty effective with the learning curve and move on to the methods that work. For example, I have learned that article directories don't work anymore. Also random backlinks don't add much value either. Using Alexa toolbar is another waste of time and money. So these method didn't worked out for me on that note.

What are some promotion methods that didn't worked out for you?

Post exchanges never worked out for me. Posting on forums can be very time consuming and as a result I have been hoping for a better result for my discussion board. The outcome I was looking for was  the users to stay, posts regularly as genuine active forum members

I feel like post exchanges help to fill the forum early on, as new people don't like to join empty forums. They want to feel like there are other people to talk to.

Did you do one time or active exchanges? I keep doing active exchanges myself and after awhile I had a lot who had to stop but still ended up coming back to the forum from time to time.

I am an Admin on a Christian forum and I went through my denomination's website and retrieved email listings for churches throughout the United States. I created a nice email that invited them to the forum and offered to help them build a community within our forum for their congregations. I received 2 replies that were negative and no sign ups from my mailings and I emailed out over 2,000 emails over the course of a few months. It was a failure.

so much for showing love when you get negative comments 😛 but when you email over 2000 places, you were most likely just treated as spam.

I did a one time post exchange on Forum Promotion. Perhaps I should try active post trading.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go when I have a moment.

Well, i have to say that free anything doesn't work (One of a few exceptions is Forum Promotion for certain niches.).  It takes cash to move anything.  That's just the way it is!

Anyway, in the past, though, i did do quite well with SEO, a free method, sort of, but SEO was way easier then.

Post exchanges are one thing that never really worked for me anyway - I always found that I spent more time chasing the people I was meant to be exchanging posts with to do their part of the deal after I'd done mine. Spent more time on their forum than my own sometimes! Was just a major waste of my time anyway, felt I could've done more on my own forum with the time I spent doing that.
