When you visit a website why?
usually to gain information, and would you be visiting a new website to get information you could of gotten off of that other website you visited yesterday? No!
unfortunately in todays world we really need to set ourselves apart and the same goes for our website.
Maybe your website is Niche based and you can create content that isn't already available.
if you are creating a General topic based website then you probably need to find something that sets you apart from the rest.

I'm going to be honest- in my experience it's very rare (if not impossible) for there to be a site that truly has content that 'sets them apart'. With the internet being so heavily populated with people from all over, almost every niche and interest worth it's salt has it's own website. You're not really going to find many communities that have something that sets them apart from the rest.
Something that makes them more appealing than another community, sure, but unless you plan to make a community built off of an oddly specific and strange niche, it's been done.

I think we've go to the point where nothing is original and if it is, it's very rare. I think we've experienced stuff beyond our boundaries especially in this day and age. I'm not quite sure what sets my site apart at the moment, that is something I am still figuring out.

Yeah, I've noticed that about restaurants also. If you can provide the same food, but have a place where "everybody knows your name" and the service isn't so robotic - then you can make a killing.

I couldn't agree more with this..! I basically try to post news and articles in my own words, quoting and referencing where necessary. If you can add a bit of humour, or something a bit different whilst you're at it then your site has character at least.

It is not just about being different, but being smart about it. Many people think you need something radical, but it is more important to understand the needs of the people visiting us. Being different without being useful will probably backfire.
Sometimes the things we do differently can be in the details. Take this website for example, it is not the first hybrid blog-forum or administration community I've found, but the articles being written for it, those are offering Ash's experiences. The portal has helpful tips for people starting websites and forums presented in a way that it is easy for them to stumble upon. Maybe the idea of the topic of the articles is not unique, but the layout is from someone who understands what people will be looking for and is trying to bring it fort.
The way the community conducts themselves, the way the staff handles conflicts, the kind of topics, the atmosphere is what can help make this community feels differently, in a good way and something that will compel other people to visit and stay.
