Most of the shared host claim to have some sort of backup assurance. However they either impose limit on how much data to backup or they simply shrug it off their shoulder. In such case relying on the host for backup of your database can be risky. And you may get into more or less trouble if site goes down. In some cases you can download the database and sync it on Google drive or Dropbox or OneDrive. But this process can't be automated unless you have VPS of some sort.

So how do you backup your hosting data?

Manually to my computer.

If I really wanted to, I could set up another server and have nightly backups made and automatically sent to another server, so it wouldn't consume the disk space I have remaining on my live production server.

I usually back up my data to my computer weekly, and my host also do take back regularly. But it is always a best practice to have our own back either online or in PC.

I just manually back everything up and place it onto my PC and a external storage just encase anything bad were to happen all at once.

I'm a little different unlike the other users who have replied here recently. I'm with TapaTalk and the company manages all of the maintenance and backups.

Never in my years of hosting a forum have I had anything bad happened to me which could result in data loss.

I'd be a bit weary of them, not many like the way they do things and it seems they can do whatever they want with the forums they own.

Thank you for the advice. What do you recommend I do? I'm not to sure on how to transfer the data to a paid provider if I don't have a copy of the database.

Do you know if TapaTalk offers manual backups to its customers? I don't mind paying a small charge to move to a premium Web hosting service so I have more control

I think that it's best to backup the data to your PC and one more place like a cloud or external storage device. It's always good to have your data secured in more than one place as you never know what can happen at any moment. Also, some hosts offer daily backups which is good too.

The hosting that I plan to terminate soon has a backup; the new VPS does not. Anyway, i plan on doing something about that ASAP - because no backup is dangerous - even with good passwords.  Well, maybe it isn't.  I don't know.
